About

We focus on the marginalized and underprivileged people of Dehradun to cater their needs with love. The true intent of IVM is to bring people to the knowledge of a transformed and productive life.

Who We are

The Origin

IVM had its origin in the heart of a visionary student, Shibu Oommen; he along with like-minded people started to carry out the passion of helping the downtrodden ones of the society. They were challenged to do something that would impact the lives of people for good, which would also afford opportunities to share God’s love with those in need. Thus, was born the idea of India Village Mission (IVM), and as the first practical step in pursuance of this idea was launched “The Village”, a project for the welfare of women and girls.

“The Village” had begun as a workstation where poor village women and girls were given vocational training, helping them to earn a living. The income from the sale of the exquisite hand-made products were shared as wages for participants. The exposure to our love brought a major transformation to most of the participants and this supplied the inspiration for IVM to get established. Since then, over the years, IVM had to adapt to circumstances, and our activities have changed a bit, but the goal and the emphasis remained the same. It is the diligent work that has borne real transformation in the lives of people who are illiterate and have less knowledge of meaning and value of life.

IVM Today

The three words ‘India’, ‘Village’, and ‘Mission’ essentially describe what we are!  India is the scene; the Indian village is its focus and mission is its spirit to bring God’s love and transformation among the villagers. We do small things – “little deeds of kindness” that help make our world a little better. “The Village” had begun as a workstation where poor village women and girls were given vocational training, helping them to earn a living. The income from the sale of the exquisite hand-made products where shared as wages for participants.

The exposure to God’s love proved to be a life-changing experience for most of the participants and this supplied the inspiration for IVM to get established. Since then, over the years, IVM had to adapt to circumstances, and our activities have changed somewhat but the goal and the emphasis remained the same. Education is a major tool to eradicate the ignorance and the bondage that the deprived are stuck in; this can later transform these minds to bring a change in the society. The famous Quote “Know the Truth and the Truth shall set you free” is indeed true and IVM is on the move by providing education to the young bright minds in the slums – and by this, they understand their situation and eventually direct their paths to get out of the rut. This initiative has helped many children to improve in their studies. It’s a well-known fact that the rate of unemployment is steeping each day and many in these deprived areas lack basic skills to support themselves and thus increasing poverty. Through IVM a good number of women have learned to tailor and are now able to support their families and live a better life than before.

What We Do

Mahatma Gandhi has said: “the soul of India” (simply, the real India) lies in her villages.   This little statement seems to express a very valuable truth about India that is worthy of note by all who care about the well-being of the land and its people.  For one thing, the vastness, the variety, the vitality, the color . . . indeed the very pulse of India, is to be experienced in its villages. So it is also with the harsh realities of poverty, isolation, neglect and helplessness. No doubt there are cities bulging with people, some of which are pockets of prosperity and they have a character of their own, but the city populations are largely drawn from villages and their character is evolved by pressure of circumstances.

The “original “is the village!  Want to know India?   See it in its villages! The three words ‘India’, ‘Village’, and ‘Mission’ essentially describe what we are!  India is the scene, the Indian village is its focus and mission is its spirit to bring God’s love, healing and forgiveness among the villagers. We do small things -   “little deeds of kindness” that help make our world a little better.

Vocational Training

We offer training in stitching and tailoring to women and girls in the locality as a 6 months certificate course. Stitching orders are also taken from the people and service provided at a minimal rate. Basic education is given to those who are illiterate.

Counselling

Our staffs are equipped to give counseling to those who have personal and family issues. We know the importance of home and try to have constant follow-ups.

Informal education of children

This is monitored by efficient teachers from different states of the nation. We have three learning centres providing “ After School” help in their studies, free of tuition. A regular gathering of students on Sundays functions for their moral teaching and development of various skills.

Community health program

Nutritional support for mother and child is a real concern for the village people. With the help of well wishers we make available healthy food supplements and teach them personal as well as societal hygiene.

Social Entrepreneurship Program

The concept of entrepreneurship needs to be organised in a professional way so that they can sell their hand made products bringing regular income.
